But how does Pixar come up with those characters, make them more than just generic ideas, and really bring them to life?

Introduction to character. Internal vs. Every story that is told has a foundation, or structure. Introduction to structure. While telling almost any story involves words, characters and structure, making a film involves another aspect of storytelling that Pixar thinks a lot about: visual language. Visual language refers to how imagery is used to convey story ideas or meanings. Perspective, color, and shape can all be used to support a story by guiding the audience to see and feel certain things.

Introduction to visual language. Film grammar. Making a movie requires an understanding of the principles and terminology of cinematography, like camera angles, editing, composition, and movement of the camera and characters.

This is also known as Film Grammar, and like actual spoken grammar, it is a language used to tell stories in a visual way. Each scene, shot, and frame is considered and crafted using this language. In this lesson we explore the basic Film Grammar used in cinematography and how Pixar approaches its use in storytelling.

You will also use these principles to plan shots for your own film. Introduction to film grammar.The work done by a visual development artist closely relates to a concept artist, but vis dev usually applies to animated movies and TV shows.

Visual development artists create the mood, tone, and color palette of every piece for an animated movie.

The art of storytelling

This can include environments, characters, clothing, props, you name it. The job is very demanding but also offers incredible freedom in actually designing an imaginary world from scratch.

She explains the importance of adventure and the willingness to grow as an artist and a person. Visual development artists work to create a world with characters that are appropriate to the storyline. Their job is to set the tone for various scenes, settings, landscapes, buildings, and almost everything else. Once a movie is in motion the vis dev artist works to build a visual world that best aligns with the intended vision of the production. Ideas come down from producers and writers which go to the creative director, art director, and the vis dev team.

Many vis dev artists work with a combination of 2D and 3D programs, but it also greatly depends on the production. Even if a movie is being animated in 3D the art director might prefer all vis dev work to be in 2D. Some productions may also push specific tasks to different artists like environments and characters. But visual development artists should be good enough to handle it all!

One special part of vis dev work is the color key or color script. This is a board of shots featuring moods and colors made to reflect the tone of the production.

Lighting can take on different colors which will largely affect the mood of the piece. Lou Romano has published various color scripts from the movie Up!

In fact Pixar published a brilliant book titled The Art of Pixar: 25th Anniversary with color scripts picked from over 25 years of animation. This book is full of gorgeous visual development work and goes to show how much is hoisted onto these artists during production.

You can find tons of interviews online with visual development artists who spill the beans about their job. One interview with vis dev artist Katerina Pantela is extremely encouraging. His advice would be useful for concept artists and vis dev artists alike, but the key factor is a knowledge of fundamentals and enough creativity to get the job done. We wanted to know more about this artist so on our visit to a media day at Mattel for Toy Story, we sat down with her to learn a little more about her and her work at Pixar. Ana Ramirez: I do visual development, which is basically like concept art for the movie.

So we come in very early on and help develop the characters, set design, costumes, color, all that stuff. I did some design on Bo Peep early on. We also got to retouch some of the older characters and rethink them.

EA: How did you get to work on this film? How long have you been at Pixar? EA: What is your favorite part or your best takeaway of working on these Pixar films?

AR: My favorite part of working on these films are the relationships I make while working on them; I work with very different people so being able to forge relationships with them is the best part of working on films. This of course, besides the techniques I learn while working on them.

For all of us in general, it was a lot of pressure to take what we had with these films which was already good and make another movie, but make it even better. Growing up in Mexico, I would've never imagined when I watched these films at the movie theatre, that I would one day be a part of it by working on one of its installments.

EA: You came from Mexico and started an amazing new career at Pixar, how was that transition from Mexico and how did you land a job at Pixar? But while in France, I still had the desire to attend that university so I kept applying. I ended up getting in the second time I applied, which is why I moved to Los Angeles at the age of EA: Congrats! AR: Thanks!
